Mount Athos is unique and the only monastic republic in the world that maintains ancient Orthodox tradition. It takes up a whole peninsula, which has an approximate length of 80 kilometres and a width of 20 kilometres, on the entire territory of which live only monks, who have dedicated their lives to serving God. Every day here, vigils take place and prayer never stops.

On Mount Athos there are twenty monasteries, one Russian, one Bulgarian, one Serbian, and seventeen Greek monasteries. The monasteries contain ancient shrines of Orthodoxy, miracle-working icons and relics.

Time seems to have literally stopped here. Most monasteries adhere to the so-called Byzantine-time system, whereby midnight comes at sunset.
